Hotels are constantly worried about security. It is important to keep guests safe along with securing the property in general. At the same time, guest convenience and ease of use are important factors to consider. For these reasons it is key to select the right modern hotel lock system.
To help you get an understanding of the options that you have we are going to talk about a few of the different modern hotel lock systems.
KEYCARD SYSTEMS
First, we wanted to mention that almost all modern hotels use keycards for their lock systems. Keycards are easy to manage and can be turned off or otherwise negated if lost or not returned. All of the options we are going to talk about are going to be keycard options for that reason.
PUNCH CARDS SYSTEMS
One of the longest existing access control systems for hotel rooms is the punch card. These are cards that have a set of holes in them that the lock reads. The holes can appear in a total of 232 different combinations, allowing for you to change locks after a guest leaves the property.
A traditional punch card system uses a mechanical system that actually mechanically recognizes the holes punched in the card. Now, most of the systems use LED lights to recognize holes.
MAGNETIC STRIPE CARD SYSTEMS
One of the most common types of access control systems for hotel rooms is the magnetic stripe system. These cards have a black magnetic stripe down one side of the system. A reader inside the lock reads the information that is on the stripe to determine whether it should open or not.
Magnetic card stripes and the locks can be programmed with a computer so that you can control who can access the door easily. Lost cards, damaged cards, or unreturned cards can all be managed easily.
RFID CARD SYSTEMS
RFID is becoming a new standard in keycard systems around the world, whether it be hotels or anything else. RFID stands for radio frequency identification and is a method of wirelessly transmitting information over short distances. Despite the fact that the nature of the system broadcasting information, the relatively short distances and secure nature of the cards makes them incredibly safe.
RFID technology is used in more than just access control so it has had plenty of time to be adapted and improved. Passports, parking facilities, and tracking are just some examples of industries that use RFID tech.
Like magnetic stripes, RFID cards can be set up and managed through a computer system. Even remotely. RFID card systems can be some of the easiest to administrate as you don’t have to have the card present, just the card’s information (usually a card number).
